Jakarta - A moderate earthquake rocked Nias Island off the western coast of Indonesia's North Sumatra province early Wednesday, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, a meteorological official said.
The magnitude-5.4 tremblor struck Nias and nearby areas about 7:46 a.m. (0046 GMT), said Uma, an official at Jakarta's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
Uma said the earthquake's epicentre was about 100 kilometres southeast of the provincial capital, Gunung Sitoli, and took place about 18 kilometres beneath the seabed.
The quake was the latest in a series temblors to rock the area in recent weeks, said Uma, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.
Nias and nearby islands have been hit by hundreds of earthquakes and aftershocks since a powerful magnitude-8.7 earthquake rocked the island in March, killing more than 600 people and injuring thousands of others.
